Biden Expresses Hopeful Optimism as He Unsure Iran Will Cease Aggression

U.S. President Joe Biden, speaking at the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, expressed hope that Iran would de-escalate despite its threats to retaliate for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. This follows an increase in regional tensions after the Israeli military killed Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander, in Beirut. Biden, however, admitted he wasn’t sure if Iran would stand down.

In response to the threats, the Pentagon announced the deployment of additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the Middle East. Haniyeh’s death adds to a series of assassinations as the Gaza war approaches its 11th month, raising fears of a broader Middle East conflict. Hamas is now in the process of selecting a new leader.

Amid diplomatic engagements by the U.S. and its allies, including France, Britain, Italy, and Egypt, efforts are being made to prevent further escalation. The U.S. has advised its citizens to plan their departure from Lebanon, and similar advisories have been issued by the U.K. and Canada.

Violence on Saturday saw the Israeli military conduct an airstrike in Gaza City killing at least 15 Palestinians, while two separate airstrikes in the West Bank resulted in the deaths of nine militants, including a local Hamas commander. Gaza health officials report over 39,550 Palestinian casualties from the ongoing conflict, which was sparked by a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in 1,200 deaths and 250 abductions.

In a related development, an Israeli delegation briefly visited Cairo to attempt to renew Gaza ceasefire talks, although prospects for a breakthrough appear slim following recent incidents. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s significant recent blows against Iran’s proxies, including Hamas and Hezbollah.
