CPI & Affiliates Urge Urgent Probe into Pahalgam Terror Attack Lapses, Call for Enhanced Security Measures
In the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, tensions have risen across India. The attack, noted as one of the deadliest in recent times, has sparked national outrage and debate over security measures. In response, a significant protest was organized at Rotary Point in Guwahati Club on Friday, spearheaded by the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M), and the Communist Party of India – Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML). Demonstrators gathered with slogans and placards, unequivocally condemning the attack and calling for swift government action.
Manoranjan Talukdar, the Sorbhog MLA from CPI(M), voiced the collective condemnation of the left-wing parties. Speaking passionately to The Assam Tribune, he urged the Central government to adopt a staunch stance against terrorism and enhance security protocols to prevent future attacks. “May such incidents never occur in the future. We urge the government to strengthen security measures to prevent such attacks. We are with the government in this,” Talukdar emphasized. He further raised concerns about Kashmir’s vulnerability, especially given its status as a popular tourist destination, drawing attention to the apparent lapses in both police and intelligence operations that failed to thwart the attack.
Talukdar questioned the delayed response from intelligence and law enforcement agencies, which took over two hours to reach the scene. In his conversation with The Assam Tribune, he stressed the urgency of addressing these shortcomings, particularly in a region frequented by tourists, declaring, “We need to know why the intelligence forces failed to get any leads and why they, as well as the police, failed to arrive on the spot for over 2-2.5 hours.”
Echoing these sentiments, Isfaqur Rahman, a central member of CPI(M), expressed solidarity with the government’s stance post-attack but simultaneously called for a thorough investigation into the intelligence and security failures. In his remarks, Rahman highlighted the dire need for accountability, pointing out that the J&K police, accountable to the Central government, were unable to prevent the attack. “The J&K police, responsible for law and order in the Union Territory, is under the Central government. It failed to intercept the attack,” he stated to The Assam Tribune. Rahman urged for an inquiry into the incident, drawing parallels to previous attacks like the Pulwama incident, suggesting that an early investigation into Pahalgam’s case is imperative.
The protest in Guwahati, symbolizing a united stand against terrorism, also served as a poignant reminder of the need for cohesive national security policies. Both Talukdar and Rahman reiterated the importance of national unity in combating terrorism for the safeguarding of the country’s security and peace. As Kashmir remains under the lens for its strategic significance and persistent turmoil, the call for enhanced vigilance and structured intelligence becomes more pronounced. This incident is a stark reminder of the continuous threat posed by terrorism and the imperative need for a robust response from India’s security apparatus.
As national discourse continues to evolve post-attack, these protests not only highlight political assertions but also resonate with the emotions and security concerns of the common populace. The call to action from leaders and citizens alike underscores the definitive demand for a safer, more secure India.
