Ceasefire Does Not Grant Immunity: Lt Gen (Retd) Amarjeet Singh Bedi

Kohima, August 3 (Morung Express News) – Lt Gen (Retired) Amarjeet Singh Bedi, Chairperson of the Ceasefire Monitoring Group/Ceasefire Supervisory Board (CFMG/CFSB), addressed a press conference in Kohima on August 3, focusing on recent violations by the NSCN-K (Khango).

NSCN-K (Khango), one of the Naga Political Groups (NPGs) currently in ceasefire with the Government of India, has been held accountable for breaches of the Ceasefire Ground Rules (CFGR). The group recently made headlines for issuing a death threat to a government contractor, prompting the Angami Youth Organization to embargo the NPG in Angami territory. Although no formal complaint was filed, the CFMG took notice of media reports and has monitored the situation closely.

Nagaland Police registered a suo moto FIR regarding the death threat, with Lt Gen Bedi emphasizing that anyone found guilty will face legal consequences. This press conference followed a CFMG/CFSB meeting attended by state government representatives, security agencies, and NSCN-K (Khango).

During the meeting, NSCN-K (Khango) representatives stated that their group functions on voluntary contributions and claimed their advisory to Kezhaleo Rülho, a contractor, was misinterpreted as a death threat. They assured adherence to CFGR and pledged to resolve the issue promptly.

The Government of India has five ceasefire agreements with various NPGs, including NSCN (IM), GPRN/NSCN (U), NSCN (R), NSCN-K (Khango), and NSCN-K (Nikki). Bedi highlighted that although administrative support like designated camps and ID cards is provided to these groups, it does not grant them immunity or the right to inconvenience the public.

CFGR mandates NPGs to refrain from extortion, forced contributions, and intimidation, ensuring they do not disrupt state functions or developmental activities. Lt Gen Bedi assured that any issue reported to CFMG/CFSB is addressed and resolved promptly, reaffirming the commitment to maintaining peace and order.
