Brazil in Crisis: Former President Bolsonaro’s Health Scare Sparks Brasilia Hospital Transfer
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was airlifted from northeastern Brazil to the capital Brasilia on Saturday after being hospitalized with severe abdominal pain the previous day. The pain, caused by a bowel obstruction, was linked to the long-term effects of a stabbing incident that occurred in 2018. This marks the latest episode in Bolsonaro’s ongoing health struggles since the attack, which has resulted in multiple surgeries during his presidency from 2019 to 2022.
According to his doctors, Bolsonaro underwent several surgeries during his presidency and has since been experiencing recurring episodes of abdominal pain. In a social media post, he described the latest incident, saying, “After so many similar episodes over the past few years, I had gotten used to the pain and discomfort. But this time, even the doctors were surprised.” He also revealed that a longtime physician told him that this was “the most serious case since the attack.” Bolsonaro indicated that he would likely require another surgery, and his doctors confirmed that further procedures would depend on his recovery.
The transfer to Brasilia was requested by Bolsonaro’s family and was scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The far-right leader was initially admitted to a hospital in Santa Cruz, a small city in Rio Grande do Norte, before being transferred to a hospital in Natal, the state capital. Prior to his hospitalization, Bolsonaro was set to embark on a trip across the region to promote his party’s right-wing agenda, which is aimed at eyeing the upcoming 2024 presidential election. However, he is barred from running due to constitutional restrictions.
Bolsonaro’s health issues have been a recurring theme throughout his presidency and have often caused him to seek medical attention. His doctors have attributed his ongoing health struggles to the effects of the 2018 stabbing incident. Despite these setbacks, Bolsonaro has consistently maintained a strong political presence and has remained a prominent figure in Brazilian politics. As the country prepares for the 2024 presidential election, Bolsonaro’s political influence will be closely watched, particularly given his party’s ongoing efforts to promote their right-wing agenda.
