Despite ranking second on the poverty index, Meghalaya has secured the 10th position on the happiness index, citing its natural beauty, artistry, and emphasis on traditional values. Himachal Pradesh topped the list, thanks to its scenic beauty and strong community bonds. Hill states like Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Sikkim consistently rank high due to their close connection with nature. “People here love to live within nature and respect it, which majorly contributes to the state’s high happiness ranking,” the report notes. Mizoram, with its strong sense of community and high literacy rates, ranks second, followed by the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Punjab, Gujarat, Sikkim, Puducherry, and Arunachal Pradesh.
Meghalaya’s ranking is attributed to its breathtaking waterfalls, serene landscapes, and traditional artistry. The state’s residents prioritize living in harmony with nature, which significantly contributes to their overall well-being. Kerala, with its high literacy rate, efficient healthcare, and natural beauty, ranks ninth, while Uttar Pradesh, one of the economically poorer states, ranks last.
