Industry Veteran Raghav Warns of Economic Consequences, Demands Delay on Starlink Approval Amid US Tariff Battle
India Retaliates Against US Tariffs with Proposals to Withhold Permissions for Starlink
India’s government is considering a strong retaliatory response to the US’s recent decision to impose 26% tariffs on its exports. In a bold move, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha proposed withholding necessary approvals for Elon Musk’s Starlink, a satellite internet service, as a bargaining chip to re-negotiate the so-called “Trump Tariffs.” Chadha’s suggestion comes as tensions between the two countries escalate over trade and commerce.
Chadha accused the US of breaking India’s trust and disrespecting their friendship by imposing the tariffs, which he believes could wreak havoc on the Indian economy. He highlighted India’s friendly stance towards the US, including tax concessions offered to American companies like Google and Meta, and asked why India’s own country was met with retaliatory tariffs. Chadha’s proposal is to put the necessary approvals for Starlink on hold, essentially holding the company’s operations in India hostage, until the US reconsiders its stance.
The MP also targeted Starlink for its reluctance to share critical data with Indian authorities, citing data privacy concerns. Chadha questioned the government’s plan to deal with such resistance and the potential misuse of Starlink’s services. He pointed to an alleged incident in Ukraine, where Musk allegedly threatened to withdraw Starlink’s services, citing the country’s misuse of the technology. Additionally, Chadha highlighted an instance where Starlink refused to share details on a Myanmar-based drug syndicate’s operations, which were uncovered in a bust in the Andamans and Nicobar Islands.
The MP’s proposal aims to counter the alleged misuse of satellite internet spectrum, particularly by Starlink. He asked the government to clarify its stance on how it planned to deal with such issues. The Indian government has yet to respond to Chadha’s proposal, but the move is seen as a bold attempt to negotiate a better deal with the US.
The tension between India and the US is likely to continue, with both sides refusing to back down. The situation is closely watched, especially as trade wars and tariffs continue to impact the global economy. The fate of Starlink and its operations in India remain uncertain, with the government’s response to Chadha’s proposal eagerly awaited.
