Highway Users Left to Bear New Brunt of Inflation: NHAI Slaps 4-5% Hike in Toll Charges Nationwide

In a long-awaited move, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a nationwide toll hike, effective immediately. The 4 to 5 percent increase is designed to generate additional revenue, which will be allocated towards enhancing highway maintenance and expansion projects.

The cascading effect of this tariff hike is palpable, with several routes across the country witnessing changes. Take, for instance, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, where car tolls from Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut will spike from 165 to 170 rupees, while the Ghaziabad to Meerut stretch will see a rise from 70 to 75 rupees. Truck owners can expect to cough up 580 rupees for this particular route. Other notable routes around Lucknow, such as those linking the city to Kanpur, Ayodhya, Raebareli, and Barabanki, will observe a 5-10 rupee increase in toll charges for light vehicles and a 20-25 rupee hike for heavy vehicles. The revised tariff chart also includes a 5 percent increase in monthly passes for cars, with the new rate standing at 950 rupees.

As all expressways and national highways across the country are now subject to the revised tariff structure, it’s reasonable to adopt a wait-and-watch approach to assess the impact of these changes on commuters, cargo operators, and the NHAI itself.
