Manipur CM Reports Extensive Damage and Casualties Amid Ongoing Violence
Guwahati: In a session on Wednesday, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh detailed the severe toll of violence ravaging the state since May of last year. He reported that 226 individuals have lost their lives, 39 people remain missing, and more than 59,000 are displaced and residing in relief camps.
Addressing a query from Congress legislator K. Meghachandra Singh, CM Biren Singh, who also presides over the home affairs portfolio, provided alarming statistics: 11,133 houses have been set ablaze, 4,569 homes have been destroyed, and farmland belonging to 5,554 farmers has been significantly impacted. Additionally, 11,892 cases of violence have been formally registered.
However, the CM refrained from giving a district-wise breakdown of the relief camps and their occupants, citing the sensitivity and possible repercussions of such information amid ongoing crises.
Support for the displaced is ongoing both inside and outside the relief camps. The government is providing one-time assistance for the construction and operation of relief camps, alongside daily necessities such as rice, pulses, cooking oil, mattresses, bedding, utensils, thermos flasks, and utilities like water and electricity.
