Transform Your Property: Unlock the Future with TWO Powerful EV Charging Points for Buildings Over 5000 sq. m!
A fresh update in the EV landscape mandates that buildings or complexes in urban areas with a requisitioned load of 250 kilowatts (kW) or more, and a built-up area exceeding 5,000 sq. m, must include a minimum of two electric vehicle charging points. This directive forms part of the new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for EV charging stations, rolled out by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) on July 30. The SOPs aim to address practical challenges faced by resident welfare associations (RWAs), multi-storey building owners, and other consumers regarding the installation and connection of EV charging stations.
The RWAs previously lacked clear guidelines on multiple EV station installations, metering, and wiring, an issue acknowledged by a senior official from the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom). Under the new SOPs, consumers or associations aiming to install additional EV charging points in the designated spaces must seek permission from their distribution licensee, which could also be an electricity supply company (escom). Such installations in non-designated common areas require distributor consent to extend wiring from the metering panel to the charging stations, ensuring compliance with electrical safety standards.
The guidelines further empower individual consumers in apartment complexes or multi-storey buildings to set up EV charging points in their allotted parking spaces using their existing sanctioned loads. They may also opt to enhance their load or secure a new connection under the EV charging tariff category. However, in the absence of designated parking spaces, they must use EV charging points located in identified common areas within the premises.
The KERC has also mandated that distribution licensees or escoms develop their own guidelines based on these SOPs for installing EV charging stations. This move is anticipated to streamline and facilitate the adoption and infrastructure growth of electric vehicles in metropolitan and urban areas.
