Urgent Renewal Needed: Revitalize T. Kallupatti Govt. School to Combat Antisocial Activities and Restore Community Pride
Renovation Needed for Old School Building to Curb Antisocial Activities
The Panchayat Union Primary School at Kollaveeranpatti in T. Kallupatti block, Madurai, faces a pressing issue with one of its old buildings. Constructed over 60 years ago, this deteriorating structure is now being misused by local individuals for antisocial activities, despite its gate and door being locked by school authorities.
Originally, the school had around 120 students but now has only 14, attributed to the opening of new private and government schools in Peraiyur and Kallikudi. Parents prefer schools that offer kindergarten to Class XII, affecting the enrollment at Kollaveeranpatti. Consequently, the old building, once abandoned due to its condition, has become a hotspot for undesirable activities.
Teachers are hesitant to file police complaints, fearing backlash from the community. Despite the old building not being at risk of collapsing, its deteriorating state has led to it being vacated. Classes and activities have since moved to a newer building.
Education Department officials acknowledge the low student numbers, yet stress that rehabbing the old building would deter antisocial behavior by putting it to regular use. They’ve submitted a renovation request to the Block Development Officer. A block-level official mentioned proposals for new buildings for other schools are underway and plans are in place to repair the damaged sections of the old building for administrative uses.
Addressing the issue is crucial to preventing further misuse and ensuring a safe educational environment.
