Garo-Language Film "Rapture" Wins Best Cinematography at 7th MIFF

Dominic Sangma’s Garo-language film "Rapture" has garnered international recognition by winning the Best Cinematography award at the 7th Malaysian International Film Festival (MIFF) in Kuala Lumpur. Acclaimed cinematographer Toxo Xavier received the award, marking a significant achievement for this visually stunning Garo film from Meghalaya.

"Rapture" presents a profound narrative set against the backdrop of the Garo community in Northeast India. It follows a ten-year-old boy suffering from night blindness in a village plagued by fear and mysterious disappearances, amid rumors of organ-trafficking kidnappers. The film’s compelling storyline and breathtaking visuals have captivated audiences globally, shedding light on the rich cultural narratives of the Garo people.

Supported by significant film institutions including Hubert Bals, Visions Sud Est, and the Doha Film Institute, "Rapture" is a collaborative production between Dominic Sangma’s Anna Films, China’s Xu Jianshang and Sun Li, and Indian producers Anu Rangachar, Harsh Agarwal, Aditya Grover, and Stephen Zacharias. Meghalaya’s Eva Gunme R. Marak, a noted patron of Northeast Indian arts, also played a crucial role in the film’s production.

Following a year of international screenings, "Rapture" is set to make its homecoming debut in Meghalaya at Tura, Garo Hills, on August 15. This premiere in the local community is highly anticipated and expected to be warmly received.

The success of "Rapture" at the MIFF not only underscores the talent within the Garo community but also propels Northeast Indian cinema onto the global stage. Its intricate blend of local folklore and contemporary issues resonates with a universal audience, establishing "Rapture" as a standout piece in the modern film landscape.
