NIA Charges Mizoram Resident in Pan-India Arms Trafficking Network Linked to Myanmar Insurgents

New Delhi, October 5, 2023: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge-sheet against Lalngaihawma from Mizoram in connection with a nationwide illegal arms and ammunition trafficking network linked to insurgent groups based in Myanmar.

The charge-sheet was submitted on Tuesday before the NIA Special Court in New Delhi under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), according to an NIA statement released on Wednesday.

Lalngaihawma has been accused of active involvement in a trafficking network that operates across the Northeast region and other parts of India. The case, registered as RC-31/2023/NIA/DLI on December 26, 2023, was initiated based on intelligence indicating that entities in Mizoram were engaged in the illegal trade of arms, ammunition, and explosives.

Investigations revealed that Lalngaihawma had established extensive ties with Myanmar-based insurgent groups. With their support, he allegedly acquired arms, ammunition, and explosives to supply to various insurgent and criminal groups across India. Additionally, he reportedly secured substantial funds through multiple channels, including associates in Myanmar.

The NIA also discovered that Lalngaihawma formed connections with licensed arms dealers, leveraging these relationships to misappropriate non-prohibited bore weapons and ammunition while also trafficking prohibited bore weapons.

Lalngaihawma, a resident of the Mami area in Mizoram, was arrested on February 3, 2024, in Aizawl, Mizoram. The NIA has confirmed that further investigations into the case are ongoing.

This development highlights the escalating issue of illegal arms trafficking in the region and the concerted efforts by authorities to curb such activities.
