In a significant diplomatic move, New Zealand Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, along with Rear Admiral Garin Golding, Chief of the Royal New Zealand Navy, paid a visit to the Indian Navy’s latest guided missile destroyer, ‘INS Surat’, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The majestic warship, which was commissioned on January 15, 2025, is a testament to India’s growing capabilities in shipbuilding and design.
The INS Surat, designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, boasts an impressive 75% indigenous content, demonstrating Prime Minister Luxon’s interest in the Indian Navy’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The warship’s cutting-edge technologies and formidable capabilities were showcased to the dignitaries, providing a glimpse into its critical role in bolstering national maritime security. Luxon was warmly received by Vice-Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command.
As part of the ship visit, Rear Admiral Garin Golding called on Vice-Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh to discuss strategic naval engagements, followed by a briefing on the Western Naval Command’s role. He also visited the Heritage Hall at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, where he held discussions with the Admiral Superintendent of Dockyard regarding technical support for HMNZS Te Kaha’s upcoming visit in April 2025. Furthermore, he laid a wreath at the Gaurav Stambh at the Naval Dockyard, paying homage to personnel who made supreme sacrifices in the service of the nation.
This visit marks a significant step towards strengthening ties between the Indian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy, with a slew of activities planned to enhance cooperation and build bilateral ties. These include cross-deck visits, sports fixtures, and social events, which will further foster collaboration between the two navies.
