Manipur Police Nab Four Cadres in Extortion Bust
Imphal: In a significant crackdown, Manipur police apprehended four active members of two underground groups engaged in extortion from educational institutions and private businesses. The arrests occurred in the Imphal West district on Monday.
Police recovered two two-wheelers, Rs 44,210 in cash, seven mobile phones, and several demand letters during the operation, the police confirmed on Tuesday.
Two of the detained individuals belong to the banned Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF/PLA). They were identified as Wahengbam Tombi Singh (47) and Thoudam Hemchandra Singh (42). They were caught with four mobile phones, a wallet containing Rs 13,520, and a four-wheeler.
In a separate raid, officers nabbed two members of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party — People’s War Group (KCP-PWG). The suspects, identified as Huiningshungbam Kenjen Singh (36) and Irom Mikoi Singh (47), were found with three mobile phones, a wallet, an Aadhar card, Rs 30,690 in cash, and a two-wheeler.
These arrests come as part of ongoing efforts to curb extortion activities affecting various educational institutions around the Imphal area. All suspects and confiscated items have been handed over to the respective police stations for further legal proceedings, the police added.
