Protests Erupt Outside Delhi’s Drishti IAS Coaching Centre Amid Basement Sealing by MCD
New Delhi: On Monday evening, hundreds of students protested outside the Drishti IAS coaching center in North West Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar. The protest followed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) decision to seal the basement of the renowned institute, a move spurred by a recent tragedy where three civil services aspirants—Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nevin Dalwin from Kerala—died in a flooded basement at the Rau’s IAS Study Circle.
Drishti IAS, run by educator and YouTuber Vikas Divyakirti, is among seven coaching institutes, including ones in Central Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar, targeted in the crackdown on illegally operating establishments. The crackdown, which began after the tragic incident on July 27, has resulted in the sealing of 20 coaching center basements across Rajendra Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar. The MCD’s actions have been aimed not only at coaching centers improperly using basements but also at structures encroaching on storm drains.
Several videos circulating on social media show protesting students marching and chanting "we want justice" towards the Drishti IAS center. Mayor Shelly Oberoi confirmed that the anti-encroachment drive will extend to other parts of the city, focusing on basements used commercially without proper authorization.
Notable coaching centers affected by the MCD’s actions include Vaji Ram and Ravi IAS, and SriRam IAS Institute in Rajinder Nagar, along with Drishti (The Vision) in Mukherjee Nagar. The sealing operation, initiated after the tragic death of the three IAS aspirants, aims to rectify the hazards posed by unauthorized usage of basement spaces.
