Furious Transporters Stage Protest Against Unjust ‘Illegal Tax’ by Miscreants in Manipur
Imphal to Moreh Traffic Severely Disrupted by Ongoing Blockade
Traffic along the 109 km stretch of National Highway 102, connecting Imphal to Moreh, remains at a standstill for the sixth consecutive day. The disruption is due to an indefinite road blockade initiated by the Imphal Moreh Transport Association (IMTA) on July 24.
The IMTA’s protest is fueled by grievances over rampant extortion and illegal taxation imposed on service vehicles traveling this route. Drivers and IMTA members have reported confiscation of possessions under the guise of “tax” collection, prompting the association to take a stand.
In a bid to garner public support and underscore their demands, IMTA volunteers staged a sit-in protest at Lamkang Centre on the Pallel-Chandel Road on Monday. Kt Ruwngam, the president of the IMTA, appealed for public cooperation in their protest, emphasizing the need for a reduction in illegal taxes and the number of toll booths along NH-102.
The ongoing agitation has significantly impacted normal traffic flow and continues to be a source of concern for commuters and transport services.
