Huge Arms Haul Uncovered in Jiribam District: Security Forces Make Daring Discovery
Indian Army and Manipur Police Bust Militant Hideouts, Seize Cache of Weapons in Jiribam District
In a major operation, the Indian Army and Manipur police conducted a joint operation on Saturday in the areas of Bidyanagar under Jiribam district, which shares a border with Assam. The operation, which was carried out in response to a spate of crimes that made Jiribam a hotbed of criminal activity last year, led to the discovery of a significant stash of weapons and ammunition.
The joint team, comprising soldiers and police personnel, recovered a cache of war-like stores, including three 12-bore pump-action shotguns, a 12-bore single-barreled rifle, 132 12-bore live cartridges, 12 7.62 rounds, three barrel cleaning rods, a monocular, 27 bulletproof jackets, a bulletproof plate, three helmets, three jungle boots, and five handsets.
The operation was conducted in response to a surge in criminal activity in Jiribam, which had resulted in the loss of life for over 20 individuals, including women and children, last year. In November 2024, a group of militants attacked a police station in the Borobekra area, resulting in the deaths of 11 militants. The militants also kidnapped three women and three children, all from the Meitei community, from a relief camp near the police station.
The recovery of weapons is also significant in the context of a recent amnesty period, during which public deposits of weapons were accepted by the Superintendent of Police, Jiribam district. According to official reports, the surrendered weapons included one .303 rifle with one magazine, one self-loading rifle with one magazine, one pistol with one magazine, two single-barreled rifles, one double-barreled rifle, 18 country-made single-barreled rifles, one pomp, 10 pomp bombs, 10 SLR rounds, 18 cartridges, four hand grenades, one Motorola set, five gunpowder tubes, gunpowder weighing approximately 400 grams, and 16 stone bombs.
The joint operation is seen as a major success in the war against crime and terrorism in the region, and is expected to send a strong message to anti-social elements that the security forces will not tolerate any wrongdoing in the area. The operation is also a testament to the effective coordination between the Indian Army and Manipur police, which has led to the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and the disruption of militant activities in the region.
