Kuki Community Demands Justice as KWOHR Condemns Senseless Killing of Innocent Manipur Citizen
Kuki Women’s Organisation Denounces Government’s Handling of Security Crisis in Manipur
In the aftermath of the death of Lalgouthang Singsit at Keithelmanbi Military Colony in Kangpokpi District, the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) has released a scathing statement, condemning the government’s handling of the security crisis in Manipur. According to KWOHR, Singsit was killed by central paramilitary forces, a loss that could have been prevented if the authorities had acknowledged the plight of the Kuki community.
KWOHR has criticized government officials for their lack of empathy and failure to address the community’s grievances. The organisation has also targeted the "Free Movement" program, launched by the government to restore normalcy in the region, as an "indifferent attempt" to impose its authority without addressing the underlying issues. KWOHR views this initiative as a "populist stunt" that endangers the Kuki community.
The organisation has challenged the government’s claims of improved security, pointing out that weapons looted from state armouries remain in circulation, perpetuating violence against the Kuki people. The surrender of "a few rifles" is deemed insufficient to address the systemic security failures. KWOHR has also accused both the central and state governments of attempting to erase Kuki suffering from historical records, describing the imposition of President’s Rule as a public relations exercise designed to conceal injustices.
KWOHR has also highlighted the use of violence against peaceful Kuki women protesters by central forces. Despite this, the organisation affirms that the community will continue to resist, drawing inspiration from their historical struggles against colonial occupation. "We may be small in number, but we possess the spirit and resilience to resist oppression—just as we did against the British Empire," noted a KWOHR representative.
The organisation demands a political solution, specifically a Union Territory with legislature. "Our people will accept nothing less. The Kuki struggle will continue until our rightful political aspirations are met," the statement concluded. KWOHR maintains that lasting peace requires a political solution, not just the imposition of security measures without addressing the root causes of the conflict. The organisation’s statement serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges facing the Kuki community in Manipur, and the need for a more effective and inclusive approach to conflict resolution.
