Coaching Centre Deaths: Key Developments and Reactions

On July 29, 2024, multiple responses unfolded following the tragic deaths of three IAS aspirants who drowned in a flooded basement of a coaching centre in Old Rajender Nagar, Delhi. Lt Governor VK Saxena visited the area and assured protesting students of stringent action against those responsible. Concurrently, AAP leaders protested outside the LG Secretariat, accusing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) of negligence.

Tensions ran high as BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj called for an independent probe into the deaths, blaming the AAP-led government for "criminal negligence." In response, MCD Mayor Shelly Oberoi organized an emergency meeting, instructing key officials to attend.

Shashi Tharoor, a Congress MP, alleged seeing documents indicating illegal building clearances. Other political figures, such as Akhilesh Yadav, also voiced their criticism, questioning the enforcement of regulations in Delhi compared to other regions like UP.

Meanwhile, the body of one of the victims, Nivin Dalwin, was handed over to his family, while the Delhi police used water cannons to disperse protesting BJP workers demanding accountability from the AAP government. MCD officials announced the termination of a junior engineer and suspension of an assistant engineer for their lapses.

Emergency measures included bringing in earth movers to clear encroachments, with 13 basement coaching centres sealed. BJP and AAP exchanged accusations, with AAP MP Sanjay Singh alleging a conspiracy to shift blame.

The Congress party moved for an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, demanding accountability for infrastructure failures. Investigations revealed the lack of a drainage system in the basement, which led to the flooding. The Lt Governor instructed the Divisional Commissioner to submit a detailed report by July 30, ensuring no cover-up of the incident.

This tragic event has sparked widespread outrage, underscoring the urgent need for stringent enforcement of building codes and accountability at all levels of governance.
