SriRam IAS Coaching Faces Criticism Over Social Media Post Amid Student Protests
SriRam IAS coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi, has drawn backlash following a controversial social media post during student protests against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The protests erupted after three civil services aspirants died in the flooded basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle on Saturday night.
The now-deleted post from SriRam IAS read: "We express our solidarity with the ORN Aspirants. It’s time for soul searching on the part of everyone. Remember, you should not be a part of the HERD so that you are HEARD." Critics labeled the statement as "apathetic and mocking," prompting the educational institute to issue a clarification. The updated message stated: "We intended to express that you are on a historic path. To drive meaningful change in society, it’s crucial to step away from the conventional and carve out your own unique path. Stand out and be HEARD. We are with you."
The original and subsequent posts were met with widespread criticism on social media. Users described SriRam IAS’s statement as "disgusting, shameless, and evil," with many questioning the institute’s ethics and financial practices. One user challenged, "If you are so disgusting and evil, I am shocked how your products will be. Immoral, uncouth and shameless," while another criticized the centre’s wealth amid the tragedy, suggesting compensation for the deceased.
The controversy has coincided with the MCD’s crackdown on coaching centres using basements illegally. The MCD has sealed 13 basements, including that of Rau’s IAS Study Circle. Despite possessing the necessary property documents, the use of the basement for purposes other than parking and storage violated building bylaws. Additionally, the coaching centre lacked proper fire clearance. Both the property owner and the institute’s coordinator are in police custody, and authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the rapid flooding, examining CCTV footage for further insights.
