Empowering Migrant Workers: Assam Opens Ration Card Applications for e-Shram Registrants
Assam Govt Eases Ration Card Application for Migrant Workers via e-Shram Portal
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that migrant workers registered on the e-Shram portal from 2021 to 2023 can now apply for new ration cards or add members to their existing ones. This initiative follows the Supreme Court’s directive for states and Union Territories to issue ration cards to 8 crore migrant workers registered on the e-Shram portal, which has 286 million registrants, including 206.3 million linked to ration card data. The application deadline for this scheme is August 3, 2024.
Earlier this month, during the inaugural Anna Sewa Din, Assam successfully distributed over 13,000 metric tons of food grains to around 6.5 lakh ration card holders across various districts. The effectiveness of this distribution varied significantly across regions.
In West Karbi Anglong, 2,066 ration cards were issued, representing a 4.29% share of the distributed food grains. Tamulpur accounted for 4.67%, reaching 4,042 beneficiaries. Outstanding distribution was observed in Hojai and Golaghat, with 6,695 and 13,372 ration cards availed, respectively. Particularly noteworthy, Golaghat managed an effective 5.89% distribution rate.
South Salmara and Goalpara districts also performed efficiently, distributing 6.49% and 6.63% of their food grain allotments respectively. The districts of Karimganj and Cachar led the distribution rankings, each achieving high percentages of 6.99% and 7.30%, serving 15,768 and 23,961 ration card holders respectively.
Kamrup Metro district displayed commendable efficiency, distributing food grains to 13,183 ration card holders, securing 8.35% of its allocation. Exceptional performance was demonstrated by other districts including Dima Hasao and Dhubri, with distributions surpassing 8%.
Tinsukia district emerged as the standout performer, distributing an impressive 19.42% of its allotted food grains to 54,030 ration card holders, marking the highest coverage both in terms of number and percentage.
This strategic move aims to enhance food security among migrant workers and streamline the ration card distribution process across Assam.
