Manipur: Kuki-Zo Organizations Question Arambai Tenggol’s Arms Surrender, Claim it’s a Public Relations Stunt

In a surprise move, the Arambai Tenggol group, a Kuki-Zo organization from Manipur, handed over 246 looted weapons to the authorities, but the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) and Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) are not convinced. In a joint statement, the two organizations accused the move of being a "calculated effort" to improve the group’s public image and seek legitimacy.

The statement pointed out that the surrendered arms constituted only 5% of the estimated 6,000 weapons looted from the Imphal Valley, citing that this was a "symbolic" gesture rather than a genuine attempt to dismantle the illegal arms traffic.

The ITLF and COTU also expressed skepticism about the timing of the surrender, coming as it did after a meeting between Arambai Tenggol leaders and Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The groups believe that this move is a "tactical ploy" to garner sympathy and legitimacy, rather than a genuine attempt to provide widespread disarmament.

Background: Ongoing Ethnic Violence

The tensions between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups in Manipur have been simmering since May 2023, resulting in over 250 deaths and thousands of families being uprooted from their homes. Despite the village-level peace talks and government efforts to quell the violence, the situation remains fragile, with frequent reports of clashes and casualties.

Criticisms and Demands

The ITLF and COTU, which have been vocal in their criticism of Arambai Tenggol’s actions, reiterated their call for a separate administration to address the grievances of the Kuki-Zo community. They also accused the group of being responsible for the deaths of more than 230 community members.

Extended Deadline for Surrender

In a statement, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla extended the deadline for the surrender of looted and illegal arms until 4 PM on March 6. The move aims to provide an opportunity for all individuals to contribute to peace, communal harmony, and the security of the society.
