Historic Upset in Meghalaya: VPP Triumphs Over NPP in Khasi Tribal Council, Achieves Stunning Second in JHADC!
The Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) has achieved a significant political victory by dethroning the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections in Meghalaya. This win marks a major success for the VPP, which has been vocally campaigning against corruption. Led by Ardent Basaiawmoit, the VPP secured 17 out of the 29 seats in the KHADC, while the previously dominant NPP secured only four seats. The United Democratic Party (UDP) claimed five seats and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party managed to secure just one seat. Additionally, two Independents were elected.
In the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections, the VPP emerged as the second-largest party, securing eight out of the 29 seats. The NPP retained a stronghold here with 13 seats, while both the UDP and the Congress won three seats each. Two Independents also gained seats in the JHADC.
The elections, conducted last week and announced on Monday, saw an impressive voter turnout: over 70 percent of JHADC’s more than 300,000 voters and nearly 60 percent of KHADC’s 990,000 eligible voters cast their ballots. Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), an ally of the NPP, failed to secure any seats despite contesting extensively—17 seats in the KHADC and 14 in the JHADC. This election was particularly notable for the Congress, which did not win any seats in the KHADC, marking a historic low for the national party.
Overall, the results reflect a significant shift in the political landscape of Meghalaya’s tribal councils, reaffirming the VPP’s rising influence and the electorate’s call for change.
