Unlocking Prosperity: CM’s Bold Vision for Transforming Tripura’s Tax System
Agartala, 22nd February 2025: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha emphasized the state government’s commitment to strengthening Tripura’s tax system to enhance revenue and tackle tax evasion. Speaking at the GST Jaagrookta Abhiyan at Pragna Bhavan, Dr. Saha highlighted the essential role of public awareness in preventing tax evasion, noting that the state budget heavily relies on revenue income.
Dr. Saha revealed that last year, a budget of approximately Rs 27,800 crore was presented, with revenue income accounting for Rs 3,700 crore. He stressed the importance of fiscal responsibility due to the Rs 13,000 crore debt from the previous government and underscored the allocation of budget funds to sectors like the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council and urban local bodies.
The Chief Minister celebrated the significant growth in the state’s own revenue over recent years and aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Vikshit Bharat by 2047. Dr. Saha underscored the importance of GST in India’s economic framework, noting it as a revolutionary tax reform aiding business sectors.
Tripura’s tax collection efforts have seen substantial growth, with GST collections totaling Rs 510.70 crore from 2017-18 to 2023-24, while IGST collection surpassed Rs 1,000 crore. Special mention was made of the Rs 374.52 crore from cess collections in 2023-24, attributed to policy efficiency and tech advancements like the GST Analytical and Intelligent Network.
