Revitalizing Meghalaya: Exciting Digital Empowerment Surge Boosts Ampati’s Fisheries Sector
The National Fisheries Digital Platform Empowerment Program was launched on Tuesday in Ampati, South West Garo Hills. Organized by the Office of the Superintendent of Fisheries, this initiative aims to revolutionize the digital landscape of the fisheries sector in Meghalaya. By introducing a centralized digital hub, the program seeks to equip fishermen and fish farmers with crucial digital tools and insights to enhance productivity, embrace sustainable practices, and expand their market reach nationwide.
Risa V.C. Sangma, the Superintendent of Fisheries, inaugurated the event, highlighting the essential role of digital empowerment in modernizing the fisheries industry. She introduced the National Fisheries Digital Platform, which offers real-time information on government schemes, weather updates, market trends, and sustainable fishing methods. The platform complements national initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the Meghalaya State Aquaculture Mission (MSAM), which focus on enhancing the socio-economic conditions of fishers and conserving aquatic biodiversity.
Sangma emphasized the significance of financial discipline, particularly in the timely repayment of loans, as it influences the allocation of government schemes. She encouraged participants to maximize the platform’s resources, share knowledge within their communities, and manage these tools effectively.
The program included demonstrations and hands-on training on navigating the platform, where participants learned to access features like market prices, weather alerts, and government scheme applications. It also facilitated the on-spot registration of fishermen and fish farmers, with support from the Common Service Centre (CSC) of Ampati for immediate access to the platform’s services.
To bolster aquaculture practices, fish seeds, feed, and equipment were distributed to beneficiaries under MSAM and PMMSY. Participants appreciated previous interventions and expressed optimism about the platform’s potential to streamline operations, minimize reliance on middlemen, and improve market access.
The event concluded with an overview of key platform features and underscored the transformative impact of digital tools in empowering fisheries stakeholders, fostering informed decision-making, and promoting sustainable, economically resilient practices. This initiative marks a significant stride toward a modern and tech-driven fisheries sector in Meghalaya, particularly benefiting rural communities.
