Shockwaves in Jorhat: Over 10 FIRs Slam Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad
In Jorhat, a protest erupted following allegations against the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad (Taipa) for burning the Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha’s constitution. Over ten FIRs were filed at the Jorhat Sadar Police Station as hundreds of Sangha devotees gathered in outrage. The protest, backed by senior office bearers and committee members, took place at the district Namghar before demonstrators moved to the police station, decrying the act as an attack on their religious identity and values.
The Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha, a spiritual and cultural institution steeped in a century-old tradition, views the burning of its constitution as deeply disrespectful and damaging to their community’s self-esteem. A senior district committee official stated, “This is not only an insult to our constitution but also an attack on our Guru, Srimanta Sankardeva, and the values he stood for.”
An official voiced the unprecedented nature of such an incident, highlighting that in the Sangha’s history, they have never needed to file a police complaint. The controversy started from a Sangha member’s participation in the Tai Ahom community’s Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival, which led to his expulsion from the Sangha. This action reportedly provoked Taipa members, leading to the alleged retaliation of burning the constitution.
Moreover, the Biswanath regional unit of the Sangha has lodged an FIR at the Biswanath Chariali Police Station, echoing strong condemnation for the incident. So far, the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad has not issued any statement to clarify their stand. The saga continues as the community looks towards the law to address and resolve this contentious issue, emphasizing their faith in the legal system to provide justice.
