Mary Kom’s Bold Stand: Defying Rumors of Resignation from Indian Olympic Association Panel
M C Mary Kom, the renowned Indian boxer and chairperson of the Indian Olympic Association’s Athletes Commission, has refuted claims that she resigned from her position. At 42, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist traveled to Haldwani for the National Games closing ceremony, where she was reportedly dissatisfied with her accommodation. A private discontent expressed by her on a WhatsApp group was misinterpreted as a resignation when leaked to the media.
Mary Kom clarified to PTI, emphasizing that she intends to fulfill her term, which concludes in 2026, and said, “I have not resigned… IOA is my family.” Her comments about potentially resigning were conditional on repeated inadequate treatment. Mary Kom, elected to the commission alongside Vice-Chairperson A Sharath Kamal in 2022, cites the leak of her private messages as a breach of trust, urging the Indian Olympic Association and the sports ministry to locate the source without harboring resentment.
In addition to Mary Kom, the IOA Athletes Commission includes notable athletes such as PV Sindhu, Om Prakash Karhana, Shiva Keshavan, Gagan Narang, Bajrang Lal, Bhavani Devi, Rani Rampal, and Mirabai Chanu. Despite the misunderstanding, Mary Kom expressed her commitment to serving Indian sports while seeking to avoid the stir caused by baseless resignations rumors.
Mary Kom questioned the frequent misinterpretations of her statements, saying, “Where is the resignation? Has anyone seen it?” With a rich experience in sports administration and as a former member of the Rajya Sabha (2016-2022), Mary Kom remains a prominent figure in Indian sports leadership, determined to confront misconceptions while advancing the interests of her fellow athletes.
