On February 16, a tragic stampede occurred at New Delhi Railway Station, resulting in the death of at least 18 individuals and injuring over a dozen others. The unfortunate incident happened late Saturday night as a massive influx of passengers gathered on platforms 14 and 15, eager to board trains to Prayagraj for the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela. The sudden and overwhelming surge of people led to overcrowding and resulted in chaos.
In response to this incident, the Railways has announced compensation for the victims’ families, offering Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh to those seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh to individuals with minor injuries. Authorities have identified most victims, though two casualties remain unnamed, with among the deceased including at least three children.
DCP Railway KPS Malhotra attributed the stampede to a massive increase in passengers during delays of two trains. To address the rush, Railways previously operated four special trains to manage and evacuate the overwhelming crowd. It confirmed that all scheduled trains are operating as per their regular timetable.
In light of the tragedy, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav shared his condolences, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the unfortunate stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones.” He assured that the entire team is actively assisting those affected by the tragedy.
Authorities are currently investigating the causes of the stampede and have increased security measures at the station to prevent any recurrence. This devastating incident highlights the pressing need for effective crowd management and stringent safety measures in handling large gatherings at key transit points across the nation. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on ensuring passenger safety and averting such tragedies in the future.
