Arunachal’s Bold Move: Home Minister Engages Christian Forum Chief for Empowering Dialogue on Freedom of Religion Act
Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister, Mama Natung, has extended an invitation to the President of the Arunachal Christian Forum (ACF), Tarh Miri, and his delegates to discuss the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978. The meeting is set for February 21 at 10:30 am, located at the AP Civil Secretariat in Itanagar.
In a letter to Miri, the Home Minister’s Personal Secretary also urged the ACF to suspend their planned hunger strike in anticipation of the upcoming dialogue. This development arises amidst intensifying protests by the ACF concerning the Act’s enforcement. Earlier, Chief Minister Pema Khandu had advocated for discussions with the protesting group, assuring them that the newly devised rules under the Act are not aimed at any particular religious community.
The Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act was enacted 46 years ago under the leadership of former Chief Minister P K Thungon. It seeks to prevent forced religious conversions through inducement or fraudulent means. Offenders can face penalties, including up to two years of imprisonment and fines reaching Rs 10,000.
Chief Minister Khandu has elucidated that creating the rules is in compliance with a High Court directive, as the Act, being a longstanding legislation, lacked a structured set of rules. He reiterated that the development of these rules is not discriminatory towards any religious groups, such as Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, or Muslims. Rather, the objective is to offer enhanced protection to the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh.
This meeting and ongoing discussions spotlight the state’s commitment to addressing concerns and ensuring that the Act is applied justly and transparently, fostering inclusivity and support for all communities within Arunachal Pradesh.
