Village Rockstars 2: A Heartfelt Triumph Premiering at Berlin International Film Festival
Renowned filmmaker Rima Das’ latest creation, ‘Village Rockstars 2,’ has caught international attention with its acquisition by Bangkok-based sales and distribution company Diversion for global sales. This collaboration paves the way for the film’s expansion into global markets through major platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Scheduled for its European premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) on February 16, the film will compete in the Generation 14plus section, known for showcasing youth-centric narratives that tackle social issues and contemporary challenges. This prized section is a launching pad for international acclaim and further festival exposure.
‘Village Rockstars 2′ serves as a sequel to Das’ celebrated 2017 film ‘Village Rockstars’, which was not only a recipient of the National Award for Best Film but was also India’s official entry for the Oscars. The sequel follows the character Dhunu, now a teenager, as she faces the transition from dreams to adulthood realities. The film’s world premiere took place at the Busan International Film Festival in 2024, where it received the esteemed Kim Jiseok Award, reinforcing its potential for global success.
Rima Das, who wears multiple hats as the film’s writer, director, producer, cinematographer, and editor, worked alongside co-producers Fran Borgia, Jaya Das, Yao Chen, and Cao Yu for this project. The film was brought to life through a collaboration between production houses Flying River Films, Akanga Film Asia, and Bad Rabbit Pictures, featuring a talented cast including Bhanita Das, Basanti Das, and Manabendra Das.
With its screening at Berlinale and a robust global distribution strategy, ‘Village Rockstars 2’ is poised to extend Assam’s cinematic legacy internationally, much to the excitement of the filmmaker and her new partners at Diversion, who share a profound appreciation for independent and arthouse cinema.
