Heartfelt Tragedy in New Delhi: Government Offers Rs 10 Lakh Compassionate Support to Families of Stampede Victims, Rs 2.5 Lakh Aid for the Injured
New Delhi, Feb 16: The Indian Railways has announced compensation packages following a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station late Saturday night, which resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people and injuries to over a dozen. Families of the deceased will receive Rs 10 lakh, while seriously injured passengers are entitled to Rs 2.5 lakh, and those with minor injuries will receive Rs 1 lakh.
The stampede occurred as thousands of passengers surged onto platforms 14 and 15, aiming to board trains to Prayagraj for the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela. The sudden influx, compounded by delays in two key train services, led to overcrowding and chaos, with at least three children among the fatalities reported. While most victims have been identified, authorities are still working to identify two of the casualties.
Delhi’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railways, KPS Malhotra, attributed the incident to the abrupt swell in passenger numbers due to the train delays. In response, Railways has operated four special trains to manage the increased demand and confirmed that scheduled services are running on time.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the unfortunate stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My prayers are with all those who have lost their loved ones. The entire team is working to assist all those who have been affected by this tragic incident.”
Current investigations are focused on determining the precise causes of the stampede, with heightened security measures now in place at the station to prevent further such occurrences. The Railways emphasizes its commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of travel amidst these challenging circumstances.
As India grapples with this tragedy, the incident highlights the urgent need for improved crowd management and safety protocols in high-traffic areas such as major railway hubs.
