The 94th annual session of the Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha concluded with emotional farewells at the Vaishnava Pandit Sonaram Chutiya Coordination Ground in Jorhat on February 9. Over four days, the event hosted prayers, discussions, and cultural exchanges, drawing thousands of devotees, known as sevaks and sevikas, from February 6 to 9. As the session wrapped up, the air was heavy with emotion as attendees embraced and parted ways, underscoring the deep connections formed during this spiritual gathering.
Approximately 10,000 members of the Central Service Force were seen leaving the venue in a particularly poignant moment, highlighting the unity and camaraderie established throughout the event. A young participant from Duliajan reflected on the enriching experience, describing the shared activities, meals, and memories. Despite the joy of the event, the participant expressed a somber feeling as it concluded, acknowledging the years of preparation by the organizers and the unique environment that was created.
The attendee also voiced concerns about the younger generation’s struggle to maintain religious traditions amidst modern influences, such as “DJ culture.” She emphasized the deep cultural and spiritual roots associated with Srimanta Sankardeva, noting the challenges of preserving this heritage in an increasingly modern world.
The session, attended by lakhs of devotees, showcased harmony and unity while celebrating the teachings of 15th-century saint Srimanta Sankardeva. As Assam’s largest socio-religious organization, the Srimanta Sankardeva Sangha remains devoted to spreading the saint’s teachings and fostering a sense of community and cultural preservation. Despite the bittersweet farewells, the event successfully highlighted the rich religious and cultural tapestry of Assam.
