Shocking Turn: Supreme Court Seeks Chhota Rajan’s Response in Chilling 2001 Murder Case – CBI’s Urgent Plea
The Supreme Court of India has agreed to review a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that challenges a Bombay High Court decision. This decision suspended the life sentence of notorious gangster Chhota Rajan in the 2001 murder case of hotelier Jaya Shetty and granted him bail. The Supreme Court’s three-judge bench, consisting of Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol, and Sandeep Mehta, has issued a notice to Chhota Rajan, requiring his response within four weeks. The bench noted that any procedural defects pointed out by the Registry must also be addressed.
Previously, in May of the prior year, a special court found Rajan guilty of orchestrating Shetty’s murder and sentenced him to life in prison. The murder took place at the Golden Crown hotel in central Mumbai, where two of Rajan’s associates fatally shot Shetty on the hotel’s first floor on May 4, 2001. Rajan, however, appealed the conviction in the High Court. On October 23, 2024, the High Court ordered a suspension of his sentence and granted him bail, leading the CBI to challenge this decision in the Supreme Court.
As the case returns to the legal forefront, it has once again spotlighted Chhota Rajan, a widely infamous figure in the Indian underworld. The Supreme Court’s decision to hear the plea will determine whether the High Court’s suspension of his life sentence stands, a matter of significant legal and public interest.
