Empowering Nagaland: PHED Engineers Urged to Champion Accountability and Exceptional Public Service

Nagaland Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) & Co-operation Minister Jacob Zhimomi marked the 50th anniversary of PHED Nagaland at a Thanksgiving event held at JP Park Nagaland United Village, Chümoukedima, on February 8. The event aimed to highlight themes of service to humanity and accountability amidst ongoing scrutiny. Organized under the theme “Engineering Humanity with the Universal Solvent” by the Association of Public Health Engineers Nagaland (APHEN), the gathering saw top officials, including Minister Zhimomi, urging the department to face challenges with increased dedication to serving the public.

Zhimomi acknowledged the recent criticisms of the department, advocating for those to drive better performance rather than hindering it. He pressed for improvements in transparency and accountability, emphasizing that every project should be GEO-tagged and certified to ensure professional standards. The Minister also called for community involvement in government projects, highlighting the significance of grassroots participation in development processes.

Chief Engineer and Head of Department Er Leyang Khiamniungan echoed the call for reflection and advised the department to address any inefficiencies, ensuring a continued commitment to public service. Both he and Zhimomi praised the contributions of retired engineers and celebrated the department’s pioneering efforts, some of which have been adopted by other states.

Zhimomi touched on Nagaland’s developmental journey, recognizing the efforts of leaders and citizens since statehood. He stressed remaining challenges and underlined the need for collective efforts in addressing pending issues, encouraging adherence to government guidelines for a united progress.

In his closing, Zhimomi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Nagaland and urged the PHED to align their efforts with community aspirations to meet the increasing expectations of the younger generation. Retired Chief Engineer Er KG Sumi, among others, shared historical insights into PHED’s evolution, marking the department’s significant contributions over the past five decades.
