In response, authorities are intensifying efforts to shield people from “romance scams.” The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), part of the Union Home Ministry, has launched a social media awareness campaign, coinciding with Valentine’s Week, to counter these deceptive schemes. Through #RomanceScamPreventionWeek, officials are disseminating vital information to help individuals recognize and avoid online scams masquerading as love.
The Jharkhand Police has joined this initiative, sharing alerts on their official social media platforms. One campaign poster, shared via the I4C’s X handle, asks a compelling question: “What will you do if your online sweetheart asks you for money?” The warning continues: “This romance season, don’t get duped in the name of love! Join Cyber Dost in Romance Scam Prevention Week and learn how to outsmart scammers.” Authorities urge vigilance and immediate reporting of fraud by calling 1930 or lodging complaints at cybercrime.gov.in.
A stark reminder of the dangers was highlighted by a recent case involving a woman from Ranchi. She connected with a man through a matrimonial site, exchanged contact details, and established a rapport. He planned to visit Ranchi but claimed detention at Delhi airport, requesting urgent financial support. Trusting his story, she transferred Rs 7 lakh, only discovering later his profile had vanished without a trace.
With the rise in online romance, cyber police emphasize the importance of balancing emotions with caution. Their message is clear: “Trust your heart, but verify with your mind.” In the digital realm, not every love story is genuine.
