Morung Express News | Kohima | February 4
The recent Union Budget 2025-26 has sparked diverse opinions on its potential impact on Nagaland’s economic growth. Joint Secretary, Finance, Reny Wilfred, highlighted various provisions like enhanced rural credit access, entrepreneurial support, and tourism development that promise significant benefits for the state. Notably, the Grameen Credit Score aims to improve loan access for rural communities, while the increased credit guarantees for start-ups and MSMEs could boost local entrepreneurship.
Wilfred emphasized that the budget’s allocation of Rs 10,000 crore to the Alternate Investment Fund for start-ups and the introduction of skill-training schemes for first-time entrepreneurs may foster business growth in Nagaland. The establishment of Atal Tinkering Labs and digital infrastructure improvements are expected to bolster education.
Transport and logistics also see advancements, with the UDAN Scheme introducing over 130 new airports and helipads, potentially enhancing Nagaland’s connectivity. Support for the unified logistics framework and export promotion are viewed as transformative for agricultural exports.
Tourism is earmarked for employment-driven growth, as Nagaland shifts towards experiential tourism, offering opportunities to harness tailored benefits. However, details on policies for labor-intensive sectors remain awaited.
Dr. Zarenthung Ezung from Nagaland University urged a strategy to boost revenue via untapped resources like minerals and tourism, stressing the need for improved infrastructure and public awareness. Power efficiency enhancements through micro-hydro projects were also recommended.
Contrarily, MP Supongmeren Jamir expressed skepticism, doubting the budget’s practical benefits for Nagaland. He criticized the lack of specific allocations for the Northeast and pointed out inadequate support for the MSME sector.
Overall, opinions remain mixed. While the budget holds promise in various sectors, its execution and impact on Nagaland require cautious optimism.
