ITANAGAR, 4 Feb: ED Raids Target Liquor Businesses Across Arunachal Pradesh
On Tuesday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out extensive raids on liquor businesses across multiple locations in Arunachal Pradesh, including the Itanagar Capital Region, Namsai, Tippi, and Bordumsa. The operation targeted several prominent figures in the state’s liquor industry.
One major focus was Niraj Sharma, a well-connected businessman with substantial stakes in the industry through his United Brothers Distilleries Private Limited. His establishments in Naharlagun and Namsai were among those searched. Sharma is known for his close ties with high-ranking political figures in the state, which has drawn significant attention to the raids.
Another key figure under scrutiny was Sanjay Dewan, whose NEFA Breweries Pvt Ltd, based in Lekhi, was also raided. NEFA Breweries is recognized for producing popular beer brands Red Star and Tuborg. Directors of the company include Pooja Dhanuka, Sanjay Dewan, and Lily Nabam.
Additionally, the Dibrugarh-based businessman Rajan Lohia, renowned for his business pursuits in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, faced raids at his liquor bond in Naharlagun. Lohia gained notoriety for his Manohari Gold Tea, which achieved the highest-ever price at an Indian tea auction in Guwahati.
Rajesh Aggarwal’s premises in Banderdewa and Naharlagun also came under inspection. Aggarwal’s brewery is known for Royal Style and Blue Whisky.
The coordinated raids, which began at 9 am and continued into the evening in some locations, were reportedly linked to allegations of tax evasion. The ED team, supported by central paramilitary forces, arrived from Guwahati for the operation. Despite widespread coverage, ED officials declined to comment officially on the developments. The state government, unaware of the planned raids, only learned of them through local media. A senior official from the tax and excise department confirmed the lack of prior notification regarding the operation.
