Arunachal Pradesh Governor KT Parnaik highlighted the strategic importance of the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) in his Republic Day address in Itanagar. He emphasized that SUMP is not merely an energy initiative but is also crucial for national security. Recognizing its significance, the Government of India has designated it a national project. Parnaik noted Arunachal Pradesh’s vast potential for hydroelectric power, which, upon full utilization, could transform the state into India’s wealthiest. He mentioned the Lower Subansiri and Dibang Multipurpose Hydroelectric Projects as future points of pride for the state, as they will be the largest of their kind in the country. He also expressed concerns about the risks faced by the Siang basin’s Adi community due to upstream dam constructions in Tibet, which may affect areas including Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. SUMP aims to protect the Siang belt, preventing floods and safeguarding local communities. Parnaik assured that the state government is dedicated to respecting cultural rights while promoting development, urging unity and cooperation for overall prosperity.
