Fierce Rebuttal: Himanta Biswa Sarma Condemns Congress for Unfairly Attacking Karbi Anglong CEM Tuliram Ronghang’s Crucial International Visit
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has firmly rebutted allegations by the Congress party concerning the inclusion of Tuliram Ronghang, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), in his recent tour of South Korea and Japan. Congress has criticized Ronghang’s participation, implying political motives and raising concerns about his alleged involvement in illegal activities.
Sarma, addressing these criticisms on social media, defended Ronghang’s inclusion by emphasizing his pivotal role in Assam’s renewable energy strategy. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma questioned the Congress’s intentions, suggesting that Ronghang’s tribal identity might be a factor in their criticism. Sarma asserted that Ronghang, as the elected head of KAAC, is instrumental to realizing Assam’s renewable energy objectives, especially solar energy initiatives.
In a Facebook live session, Sarma further elaborated on Ronghang’s involvement, describing him as an essential part of the delegation. With Karbi Anglong’s abundance of land and resources, including the Kopili and Karbi Langpi hydropower plants, Sarma argued that involving Ronghang was a logical step to advance the state’s energy goals. He urged Congress to respect tribal communities and avoid making disparaging remarks. Sarma highlighted that having tribal leaders represent the government should be a source of pride, pointing to the importance of unity and respect for Assam’s progress.
Conversely, the Congress party has accused Sarma of associating with individuals linked to illegal mining and corruption. Congress leader Mira Borthakur criticized Sarma for traveling with Ronghang, alleging his involvement in illegal coal mining syndicates. She accused the chief minister of leveraging such individuals for personal and political gains, claiming that the issue of unchecked illegal coal mining persists under Sarma’s leadership.
