Urgent Appeal from Meghalaya Deputy CM: Lasting Peace Awaits as HNLC Talks Window Narrows
Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister responsible for Home Affairs, Prestone Tynsong, has issued a stark warning to the banned militant group, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), emphasizing that opportunities for peace talks with the state government may not be available indefinitely. This stern message follows repeated appeals from the Meghalaya government urging the HNLC to enter into negotiations for peace.
Tynsong reiterated that the government remains open to dialogue, underscoring that similar appeals for peace talks are also being initiated by the Central government. However, he cautioned that the offer to engage in talks might be withdrawn soon, pressing the HNLC to utilize this opportunity promptly.
The context for these developments traces back to a recent action by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which has once again classified the HNLC and its affiliated factions, wings, and allied organizations as unlawful associations. This designation falls under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, with the ban effectively extended for another five years from November 16, 2024.
A Ministry of Home Affairs notification dated November 13 articulated concerns over the group’s activities, which are deemed threatening to India’s sovereignty and integrity, citing involvement in secession, extortion, and insurgency among other activities.
This situation illustrates a critical juncture in Meghalaya’s security landscape, where authorities are attempting to bring long-standing militant issues to the table for resolution, with the HNLC being urged to seize this narrowing window for dialogue before it closes.
