Stunning Insights: Nagaland’s UDISE+ 2023-24 Report Card Reveals Urgency with 12 Student-Free Schools and 31 Single-Teacher Challenges | MorungExpress

Nagaland’s education system is currently grappling with significant challenges, as highlighted in the latest UDISE+ 2023-24 report. The state faces one of the lowest Gross Enrolment Ratios (GER) in India, especially at the Upper Primary and Secondary levels. Despite having a respectable GER of 94 at the Primary level, which is slightly above the national average of 93, the numbers drop dramatically in higher educational stages. Nagaland’s GER plummets to 72 at the Upper Primary level and 46 at the Secondary level, ranking it among the lowest in the country, just ahead of Bihar. The Higher Secondary level GER stands at a mere 40, revealing critical gaps in educational progression.

The report also unveils an alarming trend: 12 schools in Nagaland reported zero enrolments in the 2023-24 academic year. While these schools employed 24 teachers, they had no students, marking a stark contrast to the previous year when all schools were operational. Across the North-East, Arunachal Pradesh recorded the highest number of empty schools, with Nagaland at 12, indicating a broader regional trend of educational disengagement.

Over the past eight years, student enrolment in Nagaland has decreased by over 21%, falling from 530,177 in 2015-16 to 412,975 in 2023-24. This decline poses significant challenges to achieving the NEP 2030’s goal of universal education.

Interestingly, the number of single-teacher schools decreased slightly, from 35 in 2022-23 to 31 in 2023-24. However, these schools only enrolled 368 students in total. Nationally, there were 12,954 schools with zero enrolments this year, further highlighting the need for focused interventions in the education sector.

As Nagaland continues to strive towards educational reforms, these figures underscore an urgent need for strategic planning and resources to improve access and quality across all levels of schooling.
