Urgent Investigation: Health Ministry Evaluates Guillain-Barré Outbreak in Pune – Know the Symptoms and Recovery Timeline Now!
The Health Ministry has dispatched a team to Pune in response to an outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), affecting 73 people in the Singhabad area. GBS is a rare neurological disorder, often triggered by infections like the ‘Campylobacter’ bacteria, which are primarily transmitted through contaminated food or water. Symptoms of this bacterial infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. Neurological Society of Pune has reassured the public that GBS is treatable, though typically affecting adults over 50.
Dr. Sudhir Kothari, a neurologist in Pune, explains that GBS, an autoimmune disorder, is caused by an improper immune response targeting the nervous system following infections. While the exact cause remains unknown, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections are known triggers. According to studies, viral infections like influenza, COVID-19, and Zika virus may increase susceptibility to GBS.
GBS often begins with weakness and tingling in the legs, progressing to muscle weakness or even paralysis, affecting coordination and breathing. Treatment involves early interventions like intravenous immunoglobulin therapy or plasma exchange, which can help manage symptoms and speed recovery. Physical therapy is essential for aiding patient independence, with most severe cases walking within six months.
The recovery period varies, usually beginning two to four weeks after symptom onset, with improvements over several months. Hospitalization might be required for severe cases needing continuous monitoring.
Health authorities recommend preventive steps, including boiling water, thoroughly washing fruits and vegetables, and proper cooking of poultry and meat to reduce the risk of infection. Good hygiene practices such as washing hands and avoiding shared utensils are urged during the outbreak. Immediate medical attention is advised for sudden limb weakness or persistent diarrhea.
