Trump’s Bold Move: Transformative Sanctions Loom as Pressure Mounts on Russia to End Ukraine War
In a recent statement, former U.S. President Donald Trump urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine. He warned that failure to reach an agreement could result in increased tariffs and sanctions on Russian goods. Speaking on his Truth Social network, Trump emphasized the urgency of making a “deal,” threatening economic repercussions if no progress is made. He stated, “If we don’t make a ‘deal’, and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the US, and various other participating countries.”
While Trump expressed that he was “not looking to hurt Russia,” he asserted that settling the conflict would benefit both nations, noting that Russia’s economy is faltering. Trump, who has previously expressed admiration for Putin, insisted that the war could have been avoided. “It’s time to ‘make a deal.’ No more lives should be lost,” he added.
In prior comments, Trump indicated potential additional sanctions if Putin did not engage in peace talks. However, he refrained from committing to continue President Joe Biden’s policy of supplying weapons to Ukraine.
Before taking office, Trump anticipated ending the Ukraine conflict, even hinting at leveraging aid to compel Kyiv to make concessions to Moscow. In a rare critique, he accused Putin of “destroying Russia” by not pursuing a deal and suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was open to a peace agreement.
Trump maintained that direct talks with Putin could produce positive results and anticipated speaking with the Russian leader soon. “A call between the men will happen ‘very soon,'” he assured. The world awaits to see if Trump’s aggressive diplomatic approach will bring an end to the prolonged conflict.
