Revolutionary Discovery: Boost Neuron Growth with Exercise through New Nerve-Muscle Crosstalk
Regular exercise is well-known for enhancing physical health, but recent research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology suggests it may also significantly benefit the nervous system. Published in Advanced Healthcare Materials, the study reveals that physical activity could stimulate neuron growth, offering potential advancements in therapies for neurodegenerative disorders.
MIT engineers, including Ritu Raman, discovered that muscle stimulation might promote nerve development. Their experiment involved growing mouse muscle cells and stimulating them using a flashing light. This process released myokines, proteins that appeared to accelerate neuron growth up to four times faster than normal. The study also demonstrated that mechanical forces, akin to those experienced during exercise, could enhance neuronal development independent of myokines.
Furthermore, the findings indicate that exercise promotes not only neuron growth but also their maturity and function. This discovery paves the way for exercise-based therapies to aid nerve repair, especially relevant for neurodegenerative conditions like ALS. By fostering the interaction between muscles and neurons, researchers aim to develop innovative treatments to heal nerve injuries more effectively.
