Heartwarming Praise: Manipur CM Applauds Laiching Kangshang Village’s Bold Shift to Thriving Vegetable Farming, Abandoning Poppy Cultivation
Chief Minister Biren Singh recently inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee and VIIIth Biennial Sports Meet of the All Maring Sports Association (AMSA) at the AMSA Sports Complex, themed “Legacy of Yesterday, Champion of Tomorrow.” The event emphasized the role of sports in uniting communities and preserving cultural heritage.
In his address, Chief Minister Singh highlighted the importance of harmony among indigenous communities, advocating for peaceful coexistence inspired by historical unity during adversities. He praised the Maring community’s resilience, especially their contribution during the Seven Years’ Devastation, and stressed the need to protect cultural heritage.
Singh acknowledged the efforts of villagers in combating drug abuse by replacing poppy cultivation with vegetable farming, aligning with the state’s War on Drugs initiative. In terms of development, he announced a Rs. 2.5 crore investment for a sports complex, including an indoor gym. Additional infrastructure plans were unveiled, including road improvements from Pallel to Laiching Kangshang Village and the construction of a women’s market.
Further initiatives under consideration include establishing a branch of the Employment Exchange office, a power sub-station, and a Primary Health Sub-Centre. Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to tackling illegal migration and unrecognized villages in border areas while ensuring support for minority communities to foster inclusive state development.
Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai applauded the Maring community’s courage and commitment to sports. He emphasized nurturing local talent through initiatives like Go to Hills, Go to Village, and Meeyamgi Numit, which aim to bring governance closer to the people.
At the event, a diamond jubilee souvenir was released, and a commemorative monolith was unveiled. The gathering included several dignitaries such as Ministers, MLAs, and village leaders, celebrating the Maring community’s legacy and future aspirations.
