Nicole Kidman is proving her box office prowess with her latest film, “Babygirl,” which is quickly becoming one of A24’s top-grossing releases. Premiering on Christmas Day 2024, alongside “Nosferatu” and “A Complete Unknown,” this R-rated film is captivating audiences with its erotic narrative. Directed by Halina Reijn, “Babygirl” sees Kidman in the role of a high-flying CEO whose life spirals as she starts a risky affair with an intern.
With a production budget set at a modest $20 million, “Babygirl” has already recouped its costs. Nevertheless, for the film to turn a profit, it aims to surpass the $50 million mark—a feasible target if last year’s trends in small-budget movies are any indication.
According to Luiz Fernando, A24’s “Babygirl” brought in an impressive $602K on its fourth Friday, maintaining strong performance despite shedding 427 theaters and facing competition from numerous PG-rated films. The movie saw a drop of just 29.8% from the previous Friday while playing in 1,460 theaters across the U.S. Thus far, the film has accumulated $23.9 million domestically, with a promising fourth three-day weekend projected to add between $2 million and $3 million, pushing it over the $25 million milestone.
International receipts for this erotic thriller stand at approximately $5.3 million, bringing the worldwide total to $29.28 million. “Babygirl” has overtaken A24’s 2017 hit “The Disaster Artist,” which amassed $28.72 million globally, to become the company’s 19th highest-grossing film. Moreover, the movie has not only recuperated its budget but also surpassed it by 46.4%. Kidman’s performance in “Babygirl” is receiving rave reviews, with co-stars Harris Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, and Antonio Banderas adding to the film’s appeal, which debuted in the U.S. on December 25.
