Exciting Breakthrough: Govt Moves to Empower Indigenous Voices by Considering Kokborok for 8th Schedule
Tripura Aims to Elevate Kokborok’s Status in Indian Constitution
Agartala, 19th January 2025:
Tripura’s Agriculture Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, recently announced the state government’s active pursuit of including the Kokborok language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This initiative aims at fostering the language’s development, as revealed during the 47th Kokborok Diwas celebrations at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan.
Minister Nath, who formerly served as the Education Minister, emphasized the strategic goal of integrating Kokborok into the constitutional framework. "Our primary objective is to secure its place in the Eighth Schedule, vital for the language’s advancement. We honor the demand for adopting the Roman script for Kokborok and have established a committee to explore this," Nath mentioned.
The BJP-led government in Tripura has significantly prioritized enlarging the Kokborok Diwas celebration, extending its reach to block and sub-divisional levels and educational institutions. This comprehensive approach has led to the inclusion of Kokborok as a subject at all educational levels, from primary school through to university. Over 12,000 students in about 1,296 schools are currently learning Kokborok.
Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the government’s efforts to assimilate Kokborok into CBSE curricula and Judicial Services, reflecting the broader commitment to language diversity. He stressed the cultural significance of language preservation, citing efforts such as renaming Baramura Hills to Hatai Kotor and Gandacherra to Ganda Twisa to honor Kokborok traditions.
In his closing remarks, Nath urged the community to nurture their mother tongue while showing respect for other languages. He warned that the extinction of indigenous languages, such as Karbong, jeopardizes cultural and societal heritage. Thus, preserving and strengthening these languages is pivotal for enriching Tripura’s cultural tapestry.
