Emotional Appeal: Arunachal Health Minister Urges Powerful ‘Ghar Wapsi’ for Doni Polo Faith Revival
In a significant effort to preserve and promote the indigenous faith and cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh, Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge inaugurated the new Nyedar Namlo in Ngoleko village, Pakke Kessang district. This temple is dedicated to the Donyi-Polo faith of the Tani community, built with a Rs 10 lakh grant from the government and Rs 20 lakh from the community’s followers.
The event highlighted the state’s commitment to cultural preservation and was attended by prominent figures, including Dr. Emi Rumi, President of the Indigenous Faith & Cultural Society of Arunachal Pradesh (IFSCAP), and R.T. Tara, President of Nyishi Nyidung Mwngjwng Rallung (NNMR). Nyedar Namlos serve as vital worship centers for the Tani people, venerating Donyi (the Sun) and Polo (the Moon) as central deities.
In his address, Minister Wahge stressed the importance of maintaining ancestral faith and culture, encouraging those who had converted to other religions to consider a “Ghar Wapsi” or return to their roots. He stressed, “While we may embrace religions like Christianity or Islam, we must not forget our origin and roots.”
Dr. Emi Rumi highlighted the new Nyedar Namlos as proactive steps to organize and sustain the Donyi-Polo faith. He remarked on the thriving indigenous culture in Arunachal compared to its neighboring states, where such traditions are less active. He also discussed efforts to modernize traditional practices, such as replacing economically burdensome rituals like ‘yullo’ with contemporary healthcare and educational advancements, ensuring the faith’s relevance in modern times.
The inauguration of the Ngoleko Nyedar Namlo is a vital milestone in fostering unity and revitalizing the indigenous culture of Arunachal Pradesh, reinforcing efforts to adapt and preserve its rich traditions.
