Justice Served: How Mumbai Police Heroically Captured Saif Ali Khan’s Bangladeshi Attacker
On January 19, Mumbai Police apprehended Bangladeshi national Shariful Islam Shehzad, who had illegally entered India and lived under the assumed identity of Bijoy Das. Shehzad is accused of breaking into actor Saif Ali Khan’s residence in Bandra and attacking him during a burglary attempt. The arrest occurred in Thane, following a comprehensive manhunt involving 30 police teams.
The investigation began after the police reviewed CCTV footage showing the suspect leaving Khan’s residence, where he, his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan, and their sons reside. Footage captured at DN Nagar in Andheri showed the accused, helping police track down the motorcycle he used. Local intelligence and thorough CCTV analysis led police to a rented accommodation in Worli, where Shehzad was living with three others.
Authorities learned Shehzad’s real identity through interrogations and traced his phone location. He was found hiding on a deserted road in Thane and was subsequently surrounded and taken into custody. Police confirmed his Bangladeshi nationality, as he possessed no valid Indian documentation.
During questioning, Shehzad claimed ignorance of breaking into Saif Ali Khan’s residence, stating it was his first entry into the building. He reportedly used the rear staircase and air-conditioning ducts to gain access. The Crime Branch’s DCP, Dikshit Gedam, confirmed Shehzad’s intent to rob and announced further investigation, including a possible scene recreation with the accused.
Shehzad, aged 30, migrated to Mumbai illegally five to six months ago, living under the false identity Vijay Das and working with a housekeeping agency. This revelation came after extensive police interrogation. Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan, who sustained six stab injuries during the incident, is recovering well at Lilavati Hospital.
The case continues to be under active investigation as police piece together Shehzad’s motives and activities in India.
