Fierce Protests Ignite in South Korea as Seoul Court Prolongs President Yoon’s Detention
Hundreds of enraged supporters clashed with police in Seoul, South Korea, following a court decision on January 19 to issue a detention warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. The court’s ruling permits authorities to detain Yoon for up to 20 days due to his controversial martial law declaration last December, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Yoon was initially arrested on January 15 on charges of inciting an uprising against the government. The Seoul Western District Court justified the warrant by expressing concerns over possible evidence tampering. Yoon is facing allegations of leading an insurrection and abusing his power by declaring martial law on December 3.
The announcement of the court’s decision at around 3 a.m. on Sunday led to protests by Yoon’s supporters, who stormed the court premises, overpowering the riot police. At least 46 protesters were detained during the skirmishes.
This warrant allows investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) to detain Yoon, including the period already spent in custody. After 10 days, the CIO plans to hand him over to the prosecution, which is expected to further investigate and indict him within the 20-day window.
Despite these judicial actions, Yoon’s defense argues that the martial law declaration was a legitimate governmental measure to address a national crisis caused by opposition-led impeachments of Cabinet members, legislative gridlocks, and budgetary cuts.
Yoon’s situation marks a historic moment, as he became the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested on such charges. Last month, on December 14, the National Assembly voted 204 to 85 to impeach Yoon due to his attempt to impose martial law, which resulted in his suspension from office. These developments have thrust South Korea into political upheaval, with the nation sharply divided over Yoon’s controversial actions and their implications for governance.
